Advisor & Curator
Where did you do your first internship?
I never had the opportunity of doing an internship in the arts. After graduating from McGill University in Montreal, I left to Europe to start working.
Did you have any mentors you learned a lot from?
I never had any mentors, per se. I have always been open advice from elders with more experience.
What was your first job?
My first job in the art world was at an African and Oceanic art gallery in Brussels.
Did you experience a lot of competitiveness in your career path?
When I first started the Accessible Art Fair, I was the only one to showcase artists without galleries so didn’t come accross too much competitiveness. What I did experience was a lot of resistance to the concept from people who didn’t believe that artists should represent themselves at art fairs. 13 years later, this attitude towards self representation has changed dramatically.
Did you always like to work in the art world and why?
My mother is an artist and she planted the seed of the love for art in me. I didn’t know that I was going to end up starting my own art fair, but I did know I wanted to help artists get their work out there.
Do you feel the art world is undergoing lots of changes these days?
I do feel there are a lot of changes happeneing. In the last 13 years since I started my fair I have seen that there are many more opportunities for artists than there have been and with the advent of social media, artists can market their work much more than before.
Where do you see yourself in the coming 5 years?
I am looking at a few more cities in which to run the fair and hope to develop my advisory business further.
Best career advice you received?
The best advice I received was to never give up and always be myself.
Your words of wisdom for young women?
Authenticity is what people remember most.
