Piet Mondrian Played Muse to Yves Saint Laurent

The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris is showing 50 haute couture designs that explores the influence of art – modernism – on his work, most notably his well-known Mondrian dresses (autumn-winter 1965) and the gowns made in collaboration with the artist Claude Lalanne (autumn-winter 1969).
Was Saint Laurent under the hypnotic spell of Piet Mondrian? Apparently.

As YSL’s partner Pierre Bergé once said: “Coco Chanel liberated women, but Yves Saint Laurent gave them power,” and apparently that was more than just with art, but by dressing women in dinner jackets, pants, ties, suits and safari garb.
