Known for her candid shots of women throughout the years, Bettina Rheims is showing some of her best photos of women at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris. From intimate shots of Asia Argento, Rose McGowan and Milla Jovovich, this series was first taken in 2005 to show an alternative lens to the male gaze – the women, all draped in Renaissance-like cloaks, as well as 1950s-style corsets – are shown in quiet moments, but an empowering light. As the photographer says: “I don’t know what fascinates me so much, probably the intimacy of the relationship that I manage to establish with each one of the characters. Whether they are women, transsexual, teenagers or unsure of their sex. It’s always the quality of the relationship, of this dance that we dance together.”
