Why She's Obsessed with La Serenissima
How the International Patrons Manager was “literally burning money”?!
Fempire 21 Mar 2018

Royal Academy of Arts – International Patrons Manager, London, UK

Currently a Patrons Manager at Royal Academy of Arts for over 2 years, Leslie Ramos is not only an art historian and art market business specialist, she is also a collector of Latin American Art (and a daily reader of TheArtGorgeous – thank you!). Engaged with an art gent, Thomas Forwood from Christie’s, Leslie shares with us her #objectsofdesire, why she’s so obsessed with Venice and how she was “literally burning money”?!

In the art world currently I find most exciting that…
The Royal Academy is opening a new building, 6 Burlington Gardens later this year. Everyone at the RA has been working very hard to make this happen and I cannot wait to see the final result. More exhibition space, a place for our permanent collection and a new lecture theatre are just some of the perks of our new expansion, which incidentally, is happening on the RA’s 250th anniversary.
Number of unanswered emails in your account today…
6 – I suffer from a strange auto-diagnosed OCD that doesn’t let me keep unanswered emails around for too long. Painful!
Perfect working outfit…
I’m a huge fan of the flared 50s-style skirt and white shirt/blouse, and I love the dress + blazer pairing. Despite my love for heels, I wear flat pointy shoes 90% of the time.

Favourite new brand discovery…
Charlotte Tilbury – new favourite make-up brand.
Your everyday online art read is…
artnet news, particularly Kenny Schachter, whom I find hilarious; TheArtGorgeous (always makes me smile!); and Art Nexus for news on Latin American art, which I very modestly collect and I’m particularly fond of.
Your necessary extravagance is…
Diptyque candles, cheese from la Fromagerie in Marylebone, and flowers. Most of my salary is spent on these three.
Most ridiculous thing you ever bought…
Ridiculously expensive burning paper from Santa Maria Novella. It’s a tiny box with 60 sheets of beautifully scented paper that you light on and burn rather quickly for a soft incense smell at home. When I brought it home, my boyfriend said: “So you are literally burning money now”.
Ultimate secret after long working hours…
A huge bowl of pasta, SKII hydrating facial masks and a blow dry for big glossy hair that makes you feel renewed and ready to party.
Favourite collaboration in the art and fashion world…
Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama was a brilliant one, but Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian Collection back in 1965 is definitely the mother of them all.

Favourite hashtag…

On your office table you always have…
lots of water.
The most arty city is…
Venice. Everyone who knows me knows about my obsession with La Serenissima for there is no more perfect balance of old and new. On the one hand, you have the Accademia with masterpieces from Veronese, Tiziano and Giorgione, to name a few, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, which is the art equivalent of a box of exquisite chocolate truffles by Tintoretto, the Teatro la Fenice (another place very close to my heart), where you can weep in front of the most beautiful performance of La Boheme or Traviata. And then just when you thought there was no room for modern and contemporary, you have the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Pinault Foundation and the cherry on top of the cake, the Venice Biennale. I tell you, life doesn’t get any better than this.
Who are the best dressed in the art world…
Giovanna Bertazzoni from Christie’s, Martina Batovic from Dorotheum, Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Wolfgang Tillmans.
Describe yourself with three emojis…
?‍♀️ ?? ?

Art world gent I would like to have lunch with…
(perhaps I should say… in addition to my fiancé, Thomas Forwood from Christie’s)… Gabriel Orozco and Bosco Sodi, two of my biggest art crushes.

Artists we should have on our watch list are…
two amazing Venezuelan artists, Sol Calero based in Berlin, and Lucia Pizzani in London.
Thomas Langley, who is soon to be graduating from the out-of-this-world Royal Academy Schools is definitely another one to watch. I am also completely obsessed with Alexander da Cunha (Thomas Dane gallery), and Leonor Antunes (Kurimanzutto).
