Broad City comedian Abbi Jacobson is the voice behind Princess Bean, the feminist protagonist, or as she calls the ‘anti-stereotypical princess,’ in The Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s new Netflix original series ‘Disenchantment‘ launching August 17.
It’s about time that a strong female lead takes center stage in a mainstream TV show, which here is represented in medieval times – in the first season Beane runs away from politically arranged marriages between her father’s kingdom and others, she has casual sex with Vikings, drinks beer at a men’s only establishment and wears pants (instead of dresses).
As Jacobson said, it was refreshing to play a role that young girls might see and look up to.
“I really like the fact that she’s an anti-stereotypical princess,” said Jacobson. “It’s so not what a usual princess story is—not that there’s anything wrong with that. But it’s a really strong female character, which I’m obviously excited to play.”
