Stop by Perrotin Gallery in Paris to see a sprawling exhibit by the famed French artist Sophie Calle – who, for much of the exhibit, mourns the passing of her cat, Souris Calle.
To commemorate the cat’s death, she is releasing a record album, yes, an LP, which is a limited edition of 900.
The album features dozens of songs, sound pieces and spoken word written and performed by art world icons and celebs like Pharrell Williams, Michael Stipe from REM, Bono, Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Laurie Anderson. It’s a way for the artist to have closure.
“When you say you’re sad about the cat, it’s a bit obscene for people,” she said. “You can’t say that. I mean, if I say my mother or my father is dead, everyone tells me, ‘Oh, poor thing, she lost her mother, oh, poor thing, she lost her father,’ but if we say that about our cat, we seem ridiculous. It makes me laugh, when for me, in my daily life, it was almost more violent, because I lived with my cat. I didn’t live with my parents.”
