The Art News You Missed While Taking A Power Nap
Because it’s been a big week
Art Stuff 03 Jul 2020

Hey art girl, how are you doing? Are you tired? We sure are! It’s been a busy week and while we try to juggle multiple clients, demanding artists and an inbox that just won’t empty itself, it’s been next to impossible to keep on top of art world news. But fear not, we’re here to catch you up on everything you missed!

ART

Kanye West Collabs With Arthur Jaffa

Kanye has just released new track Wash Us In The Blood, but did you know the music video was made by Arthur Jafa? The film addresses police violence killings, touching on the deaths of Ahmaud Abery and Breonna Taylor, while also including imagery of Kanye himself. A true work of art that makes a big comment on society.

An opportunity every art school graduate would jump at! Perrotin is staging Yale’s cancelled MFA grad show on its online viewing room. So, while their IRL show was cancelled, these students get to show with a major blue-chip gallery instead! The show runs online until July 18.

Takashi Murakami Faces Bankruptcy

View this post on Instagram

This spring, I streamed a series of cooking show of a sort on Instagram Live. I’m sure those who watched them were utterly confused, but I was trying to buoy my own thoroughly sunken feelings through these streamings. With the sudden swoop of COVID-19 pandemic, my company faced bankruptcy and I had to give up on a number of projects, the most symbolic of which being the production of my sci-fi feature film, Jellyfish Eyes Part 2: Mahashankh. For nine long years, I had persevered! It was a film that was to realize my childish dreams! The enormous budget I poured into this project, as well as my tenacious persistence, put a constant and tremendous stress on my company’s operation for the past nine years. But at the same time, I was able to endure various hardships because I had this project. Faced with the current predicament, however, I was persuaded by both my business consultant and tax attorney that I must, simply must try and drastically reduce our business tax by filing the film’s production cost as tax-exempt expenditure. To that end, I am going to produce and release a series of videos to publicly announce the discontinuation of the film’s production. (To be clear, this is an entirely legitimate procedure—I’m not trying to evade tax!) These videos will be released against the backdrop of our struggle to avoid an economic catastrophe, but perhaps it may have a cathartic effect on the viewers/my followers to see the story of stupid Murakami’s failure. Long story short, I’m a silly human being for whom the moment of bliss is when I am thinking my truly childish sci-fi thoughts. I don’t know how many episodes the series will end up being, but a series it will be, so please come along with me on this journey for a little while.

We wish we didn’t have to report on this one… Japanese art world superstar Takashi Murakami uploaded a heartbreaking video explaining that many of his projects are being cancelled, including a film he’s been working on for nine years. We’re hoping for good Murakami news very soon!

The latest issue of British Vogue has been taken over by British artists and photographers, each of whom has focused on the natural world for the issue’s “reset” theme. Featured artists include David Hockney, Tim Walker and Juergen Teller. The images will be auctioned later as a series of original prints with monies raised going towards Covid-19 relief charities.

You Can Catch Waves On A Dior Surfboard

A massive sale was made this week at Sotheby’s, who put Francis Bacon’s Triptych Inspired by the Oresteia of Aeschylus up for auction. The monumental work sold for a whopping $84.6 million to a Chinese bidder.

Sotheby’s Hosts Auction Of The Future

And while we’re on the subject, that Bacon sale was part of Sotheby’s first ever “Auction Of The Future“, which made an eye-watering $363.2 million. Live streamed across the globe, the marathon sale took place simultaneously in Hong Kong, London and New York.
