And Just Like That… Sex and the City is back on our screens. A cult TV series which focuses on the female friendships of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha – four smart and dynamic women.
Themes such as sex and fashion reign supreme. However, another unsurprising theme which features prominently is art – it is based in New York City after all.
Maria Diega Reyes
Reyes is the stunning Brazilian artist who had a relationship with Samantha Jones. On her first date with Samantha, they make art together, painting an entire canvas Yves Klein blue.
Schmuel
Schmuel is a Hasidic artist, who Charlotte has an affair with. The affair starts after a visit to his Brooklyn studio, where she comments: “These are outstanding. So much life. You have a beautiful way with light. Now this one is really special.” He tells her, “That’s my yeshiva. I wanted to capture the exuberance of youth.”
Neville Morgan
Neville Morgan is an artist from upstate New York who asks Charlotte to visit his barn. Charlotte is asked to model for the artist who is doing a series of paintings of the vagina – ground breaking!
Bear Johnson
Charlotte was often made the muse. Photographer Bear Johnson’s “Drag Kings: The Collision of Illusion and Reality,” is a show where he has dressed up women as men and photographed them. He comments on his work “I feel we have dual powers within each of us…Gender’s an illusion—sometimes a very beautiful illusion.” The photographer convinces Charlotte to pose in drag, swapping her feminine attire for a suit.
Yael
Yael is another of Charlotte’s artists, “a lesbian painter from Brooklyn Heights”. Her art is 40s tattoo-inspired doodles of mermaids and babely women, with messages like, “DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR” and “PAINTING NO. 700” in kiddish script.
Barkley
Barkley is a horror story of man who Carrie dates. A painter who sprays paints blobs. Carrie comments “he’s never even sold a single painting.” The notorious modelizer reveals a secret toward the end of their relationship – “This is my real art.” Various screens simultaneously playing footage he’s secretly taken of himself having sex with models. Luckily, this character was cancelled.
Alexandr Petrovsky
Aleksandr Petrovsky is a big-time artist who becomes Carrie Bradshaw’s lover in the final season. Despite not being a liked character, his artwork wasn’t that bad! A wall of lights in Paris, the rain room’… Still this does not redeem his bad character traits.
