Interested in eliminating conventional experiences from the gallery space, Kasia Kay, founder and curator of Kasia Kay Art Projects, has been working in the contemporary art field for 16 years. And what about before her curatorial projects? She was a highly respected gallerist and art dealer for 10 years, having worked with an international clientele and participated in renowned international art fairs since 2006. Let’s get to understand more about this creative soul — from the most ridiculous thing she has ever bought to why there’s a skull sculpture on her table…
In the art world you currently find most exciting that…
Various social practices and installations that engage communities, e.g. Theaster Gates, Rashid Johnston, Marina Abramovic, Nick Cave, Shirin Neshat, Michele Lamy, Virgil Abloh, and more.

Number of unanswered mails in your account today…
Hmm, probably 5 … I’ve been working these days on marketing of a curated-by-me exhibition On Guard that is going to be on view at The Storefront Project gallery in NYC in the fall (Oct 30 –Dec 1) so, it’s been a bit intense with plenty of correspondence going back and forth … Hm, there might be more than 5 unanswered yet emails … 🙁
Perfect outfit to create/perfect outfit to sell art…
To create art: when I go to make bronze sculptures I look like a typical foundry artist… plaid shirt often over a solid color t-shirt, comfortable pants, and usually almost ruined shoes.
To sell art: black is always an artsy choice. I usually funk-it-up somehow though. Sometimes I wear a white suit, or something more extravagant, not too overboard though so it doesn’t take away any attention from an artwork…
Your everyday online art read is…
One or two or more of the following: Artsy, The Art Newspaper, Hyperallergic, Artforum, and of course TheArtGorgeous; I love all the humor and professional but lighter take on a serious (sometimes too serious) art world in it.
Most ridiculous thing you ever bought…
LOL! A plushy puppy toy for my office… It’s so nice to hug it when stress gets to me.
One more — recently I curated an erotica art collection for a powder-room in my house, and bought a David’s vase depicting only a lower parts of his torso… it’s a pure male exposed! I love it, but my husband only accepts it… LOL
After a bad day in the art world, you need…
GLASS of WINE! (or more)
On your office table / in your studio you always have…
A skull sculpture — a classic reminder about mortality. My motto: “Seize the present; trust tomorrow as little as you may.”
Favourite art x brand collaboration…
– Michelle Lamy – she has been doing very cool collaborations with various artist and designers, and launching interesting pop-up projects.
– Virgil Abloh who currently has an exhibition at MCA in Chicago. The whole collaborative effort of the institution, artist and designer (fashion and functional art), his community projects and involving Louis Vuitton collaboration… (he is a head designer for the LV men’s collections). It’s just brilliant!
– Also Mimi Plange who is a great NY-based fashion designer. She has recently painted fab brushstrokes on leather garments for her newest collection. She truly is an artist! I invited her to creating an artwork for the On Guard exhibition, and I can’t wait to see what it is going to be.

Your art world girl crush…
Loise Bourgeois
Describe yourself with three emojis…
??? (last one is ‘curious’)
Art boy I would love to have lunch with…
Call me old fashioned but it is Ed Ruscha.
Favourite new artist discovery…
Esmaa Mohamoud, a young Canadian artist.
Also, Zoë Buckman who is a multi-disciplinary artist exploring themes of Feminism and equality. I’ve always loved Paulina Olowska who is known for her paintings (what a talent she is!), performances, collages and sculptures, most of which are inspired by remembrance and nostalgia.
I’m also crazed about Alicja Kwade.
#artworldgoals?
Go back to art studios more regularly and create my own artwork. Luckily, I will be able do it after launching the On Guard exhibition in New York.
