An art curator is a professional who acts as a bridge between artwork and the public. The word ‘curator’ originates from the Latin cura, which means to care. Cura is also related to the word ‘curiosity’ which a curator requires oodles of!

The role of an art curator can vary depending on the setting in which they work, most likely a museum or gallery. Some common tasks include developing exhibitions, researching artworks, acquiring artworks, collection management, and public programming. If this sounds right up your alley, and you are interested in becoming an art curator, here are some tips that may help you:

Gain relevant education and experience
A degree in art history or a related field is typically required for a career as an art curator. Additionally, gaining experience in a relevant industry, such as working at a museum or gallery, can help you develop your skills and understand the specific requirements to be an art curator.

Keep learning
Continuing education, such as attending conferences, workshops, or taking online courses, can help you stay up to date on trends in the art world and demonstrate your commitment to the field.

Build a strong portfolio
A strong portfolio that showcases your education, experience, and curatorial work can be a valuable asset in landing an art curator job. This may include exhibition proposals, published writing, and other curatorial projects.
