The Vatican Loves Andy Warhol
And an upcoming show will explore the artist's spiritual side.
Entertainment 28 Jan 2018

Big news from Rome: The Vatican will host a major Andy Warhol exhibition in 2019, celebrating the spiritual side of Warhol. Nearly 40 years since Warhol travelled to Italy to meet Pope John Paul II, the artist will be honoured with a show and works from his Last Supper series and skull silkscreens are planned to be part of it.

In collaboration with the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the museum of the Vatican schedules the show of the iconic artist’s religious works in 2019, marking the 25th anniversary of the opening of the US museum. Warhol’s Last Supper series (1986) is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Milan fresco of the Biblical scene and will be accompanied by silkscreens of skulls, as well as films and archival materials that he used to prepare those pieces.

Barbara Jatta, director of the Vatican museums in an official statement: “It is very, very important for us to have a dialogue with contemporary art. We live in a world of images and the Church must be part of this conversation.”
Apparently, Warhol himself attended Mass at a church in New York and supported a shelter for the homeless run by the Church.
