Mary Boone shuts down galleries

New York art dealer Mary Boone, who was sentenced last week to 30 months in prison for filing false tax returns, has decided to shut down her gallery after 49 years. The final two shows will open in early March

The Armory Show art fair, which will open its 25th-anniversary edition on March 6 in New York is relocating about one-third of its 194 exhibitors because of sudden structural issues with Pier 92. Affected galleries will be moved to Pier 90, the home of its sister fair, Volta, which as a result is being canceled.
Amanda Coulson, Volta’s artistic director, said that “all considered situations were at best ad hoc and would not continue the high production value that is expected from our brand. We all agreed that presenting the New York 2019 edition in an extremely modified status would be a disservice to our galleries, the artists or the visitors.” Exhibitors who had been admitted to the fair will be refunded.
Volta, which also operates an edition in Basel, Switzerland, in June, was to feature 70 exhibitors, most of them solo artist presentations by emerging galleries from around the globe.
Ghana will participate this year in the Venice Biennale for the very first time, and announced, featuring a multigenerational cast of six artists including El Anatsui and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.
Curator Okwui Enwezor, has been appointed as strategic adviser for the show.
