The art world collectively cringed this week when a collector accidentally knocked a $42,000 sculpture by pop artist Jeff Koons to the ground in Miami Florida. She had tapped it with her finger, witnesses at the event said leading it to smash into pieces. The sculpture was part of a limited edition set of 799. Some rumor the breakage was a PR stunt, akin to the 2018 Banksy shredding.

Rijksmuseum’s Vermeer show has opened to 5-star reviews. Tracy Chevalier wrote in The Art Newspaper ‘Exhibition organisers will be learning from this show for years to come. – A less-is-more approach to the biggest-ever exhibition of the Dutch Old Master’s paintings made this blockbuster a triumph.’ The special dedicated exhibition will be held from 10 February to 4 June 2023 in the iconic museum located in Amsterdam.

Whoops LV is in trouble!

An advertisement for Louis Vuitton’- Léa Seydoux in front of Mitchell’s La Grande Vallée XIV (For a Little While), as it appeared in the February 12, 2023, print edition of the New York Times.

Louis Vuitton has used the work of late artist Joan Mitchel against the foundation’s wishes to advertise the ‘Capucine’ $10,000 bag. Representatives from the estate have confirmed that they turned down the request to feature the art in the advertisement. At least three works by the Abstract Expressionist were featured as the backdrop to the campaign with actress Léa Seydoux. This week the foundation sent a cease and desist letter to the luxury fashion house demanding the company withdraw the campaign, a full accounting of where the advertisements appeared, and an apology.
