Lorde Embraces Minimalism 🎶
Lorde’s first album in four years, Virgin, drops on 27 June, and she’s taken inspiration from the artworld. Her new single “Man of the Year” explores her fluid gender identity, with a video set loosely evoking Walter De Maria’s New York Earth Room (1977), a SoHo loft floor covered in two feet of earth. She even nods to Lucio Fontana’s slashed canvases, calling her sound: “TRYING TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE A FONTANA, LIKE PAINTING BITTEN BY A MAN, LIKE THE NEW YORK EARTH ROOM. THE SOUND OF MY REBIRTH.”
