What To Consider Before Making A Career Change
What to think about before switching things up
Career 19 Jan 2021

Hey art girl, new year, new career? There are so many paths you can take in the art world, or to be frank, just about any world. As the universe has turned upside down, many of us are thinking about whether we’re really in the right job for us. And maybe, you’re not, but that’s ok! If you’re thinking about switching careers though, there are a few things you should keep in mind before making the jump. So, here are a couple of points to consider before switching things up!

Look At Your Transferable Skills

Think about the job you do now, and look at how all the skills you’ve built up can be applied to a new role. Even if you’re looking at a completely different career path, you will have lots of attributes that others will be looking for. You’ve got to believe in yourself and your abilities, then others will too.

Search People In Similar Roles On LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great tool you can use to look up the career paths of people in roles you might think are suited to you. Look at the journey they took to get there. It’s actually quite likely that their path wasn’t completely linear either. You could even connect with them for advice!

Investigate The Job Market

It’s great that you want to try something new, but it’s also important to be real about your job prospects. Investigate job sites to see what kind of jobs are available right now, what they’re paying and what the competition might be like. You don’t want to be walking into this blind.

Don’t Jump Before You Can Fly

Even though you may hate your job right now, it’s important not to do anything too drastic. We all know that the job market is shocking at the moment. It’s a good idea to stay in your current role until you secure a new one. Having a safety net is so important!

Take A Course

It’s unlikely that you want to go back to university or college and completely retrain – although if you have the time and money, it is an option – so why not take a short course? These are usually affordable and will show future employers that you are committed to a new role.

Network, Network, Network

When looking to dabble in something new, it’s super helpful to have a phone full of contacts who could be helpful to you. Make use of your free time by meeting like minded people, why not join a network like The Art Gorgeous House? You’ll find all sorts of amazing people from all corners of the art world in one place!
