You read that right, the Whitney Museum of American Art is debuting a a solo show called “Possessed” by the indie New York design duo Eckhaus Latta and it’s opening this August. Why is this important? It shows you don’t have to be Gucci to get a museum show, as these designers are still young. The brand, founded in 2011 by Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta, are a new generation of designers who are at the intersection of fashion and contemporary art. For the show, the duo will create a new installation inspired by fashion advertisements, photoshoots and magazines. They’ll also screen surveillance footage taken of shoppers in boutiques. “We sometimes showcase creative figures outside of the visual arts,” said Christopher Y. Lew, co-organizer of the exhibition. “These figures from fields such as fashion, music, architecture, design, and food approach their disciplines in ways that are akin to visual artists, often questioning the systems and parameters that define what they do, speaking to the broader cultural moment, and blurring the boundaries between disciplines.”
