Mary-Kate and Ashley may not technically be art girls, but at heart, each is the quintessential gallery girl. Even more so given that they’ve never actually worked in an art gallery, to the best of my knowledge. Allow me to explain.
First of all, there’s the outfits. Can we talk about the outfits? Even before Elizabeth and James, MK and Ashley were the OG early 2000s street style stars. Perfectly poised but disheveled, casual but inimitable, pouty and precocious, serving shade from behind their oversized glasses, the petite twins made the tabloids their runways, Starbucks cups ever in tow. They basically gave birth to the “too cool and busy to care” vibe that every gallerina emulates as she’s dashing around downtown on ultra-important assignments—like picking up their boss’ Sweetgreen, or dropping off a UPS package.
Secondly, they have strong ties to the art world, which basically qualifies them as honorary gallery girls. Mary-Kate has a killer art collection, and she’s been spotted at Sotheby’s with her husband. She’s also been romantically linked to artist and de Menil family member Max Snow. Ashley’s art world ties are a bit more far-fetched, but we’ll say she’s arty by association. Plus, the sisters are both now fashion designers, and in today’s world, where even are the boundaries between the art and fashion?
All of this is to say that Mary-Kate and Ashley channel the perfect arty workweek mood. Let’s take a tour through all of our familiar Monday-Friday moments, as told by vintage MK and Ashley pics.
