The Art News You Missed While Kissing An Art Hunk At Midnight
What happened as the art world entered a new decade…
Art Stuff 03 Jan 2020

2020 is here, yippee! While you snooze before the first week back in the office, we can bet that you’re not feeling so hot right now. Whether you were dancing it up all night with your art girls, or chilling with family, we’re sure your last week of 2019 was spent far away from the art world. And, even though we must admit it’s been pretty quiet in art-land recently, we have just a few things to catch you up on.
Picasso Attacked In London

Did you read our article about Picasso’s muse Dora Maar? Her work is currently on display at Tate Modern in London and a work in that show – by Picasso himself – has just been the victim of a vicious art attack. Bust of a Woman (1944), a portrait of Maar, was ripped by a man named Shakeel Massey who will go on trial January 30.
Artist Graffiti’s Paris Balenciaga Store

Art and fashion have always had a complicated relationship, and French artist Kidult made it a whole lot more awkward by spraying MERRY CRISIS on the facade of the Paris Balenciaga store. Apparently Balenciaga have used Kidult’s style of graffiti on one of their handbags, so now the score is 1-1. We’re waiting to see Balenciaga’s next move…
Steve McQueen

Artist and director Steve McQueen has just been honoured by the real Queen. He is now Sir Steve McQueen as he received a knighthood by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth in her New Year’s Honours list. We can bet he’s just got a bit more popular…
Grayson Perry Exhibition To Open Thanks To Crowdsourcing

How very millennial. A new Grayson Perry retrospective is opening at the Holburne Museum in Bath, England, with special thanks to a crowd-sourcing effort that brought together 70 early works by the artist that were lost or forgotten. The show runs between January 24 and May 25, 2020.
Yinka Shonibare To Open Art Residency In Nigeria

British artist Yinka Shonibare is creating not one, but two artist residencies in Nigeria, brining the spirit of his London-based Guest Projects programme to Lagos and Ijebu. The idea is that artists get a free studio and project space. Slated to open in 2021, we’re excited to see this open!
Gucci Teams Up With Mickey Mouse For Chinese New Year

2020 is the year of the mouse (well, the rat, but we’ll let that slide), paving the way for an epic collab between Gucci and Disney on a line of Gucci-fied Mickey Mouse pieces. The menswear pieces include coats and shirts and are already up for grabs online so you can have your outfit ready for Chinese New Year on January 25.
