The Gentlewoman covers via The Gentlewoman
For over forty years now, American photographer Cindy Sherman has become one of the most respected photographers of the twentieth century by turning the camera on herself. Through a series of works, Sherman has raised challenging and important questions about the role and representation of women in society, the media and the nature of the creation of art. Now, for her next project the artist has joined other pioneering woman such as filmmaker Agnes Varda, actress Allison Janney, and celebrated gymnast Simone Biles to grace the front page of The Gentlewoman magazine. The new issue is a double-cover special, shot by the famous Dutch power couple Inez and Vinoodh.
The latest issue of Gentlewoman arrives just ahead of Cindy’s highly-anticipated exhibition at London’s National Portrait Gallery – which runs from late-June to mid-September. Including the ground-breaking series, Untitled Film Stills, 1977-80, this major new retrospective will explore Cindy’s work from the mid-1970s to the present day, and will feature around 150 works from international public and private collections, as well as new work.
In typical shape-shifting form, the American photographer– appears as a bearded biker type on one cover and in black and white version of herself with no added frills on another.
The Spring Summer 2019 issue of The Gentlewoman will be on newsstands from the 27 February.
