How To Deal With Art World Frenemies
When they’re nice to your face but scheming behind your back…
Art Stuff 11 Feb 2020

Sometimes it feels like working in the art world is one big competition. There’s always someone younger or better than you, another circle to be introduced to, another party to sneak in… it can all get a little tiring. Along the way, you’re bound to make lots of friends to help you navigate this crazy environment. Unfortunately however, you’re likely to encounter frenemies too, art guys and girls who will be friendly to your face, but who are plotting to overtake you on your art world career path behind your back. But don’t worry, we’ve got a few tips on how to handle these fake friends.

Firstly, Make A Note Of Their Behaviour

What does your frenemy want from you? They are normally nice to your face, but often they’ll be asking you all the questions, giving little back in return. Ask yourself why they’re speaking to you, and what they’re doing with your information. Are they making notes? They may be genuinely interested, but hey could also be plotting your demise. If the relationship is one-sided, adapt your own behaviour accordinly.

Once You’ve Located Your Frenemy, Become Distant

Not literally, but now you know who this frenemy is, try to take a step back from the relationship. If they are benefitting from you, and giving nothing back in return, they’re not the kind of person you want to be dealing with.

Use Rivalry To Your Benefit

Of course, having a frenemy is not an ideal situation, but you can use it to your advantage. A little healthy competition could help you push yourself forward in your career.

Keep It Cool

One of the most important things to remember is to keep your cool. You’re frenemies will probably love to see you upset about the way they treat you, but don’t give them the satisfaction.

Don’t Gossip

Your frenemy may be trying the same tactic with your colleagues, but they may not have noticed yet. In these situations it’s best to keep things to yourselves, in case other people get the wrong end of the stick. Unfortunately, nobody likes a tattle tale.

Ignore Them

This is obviously easier said than done, but if this person is hurting you, and it’s difficult to walk away, simply ignore them. Chances are, if you stop giving them attention, they’ll start to leave you alone anyway.

Let Them Go

If this frenemy is outside of your office environment, then simply let them go. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life!
