For art enthusiasts who happen to be in the Big Apple in early May, an unmissable cultural event is on the horizon. 1-54, the prestigious international art fair dedicated to contemporary African art, is gearing up for its highly anticipated return for the New York edition from 1st -4th May 2024. Founded in 2013 by Touria El Glaoui, 1-54 has been instrumental in championing the diverse and vibrant landscape of contemporary African art on a global scale.
What sets 1-54 apart is its unwavering commitment to showcasing the richness and diversity of artistic expression from Africa and its diaspora. With editions in London, New York, and Marrakech, 1-54 has emerged as the premier platform for artists, galleries, and collectors to engage with this dynamic artistic movement. The fair’s name itself, “1-54,” symbolizes the fifty-four countries that constitute the African continent, reflecting its inclusive and expansive vision.

This year’s New York edition promises to be the largest yet, featuring over 70 artists from Africa and the global diaspora, represented by 30+ galleries. The fair will take place in the heart of Manhattan, in Chelsea’s esteemed Starrett-Lehigh Building, known for its role as a creative hub for various industries.
For its 10th anniversary, 1-54 New York is set to make a significant impact by expanding its footprint within the city. Once again coinciding with Frieze New York, the fair’s relocation to Chelsea underscores its growing influence and significance within the global art scene.
Attendees can expect a diverse selection of galleries from Lagos to Lausanne, Miami to London, showcasing a wide range of artistic styles and perspectives. Notably, eight galleries will be making their debut at the fair, further amplifying its mission to provide visibility to emerging and established talents alike.
The fair will kick off with a VIP preview on 1st of May, followed by public opening days from the 3rd – 4th May. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with artworks, participate in artist talks and panel discussions, and immerse themselves in the vibrant energy of contemporary African art.
