Tips for Returning to Work After the Summer in the Art World
Summer was dreamy, but the art world waits for no one.
Career 15 Sep 2025

So, you’ve made it through the hazy days of summer. Maybe you were drifting between Mediterranean beaches, or maybe your biggest accomplishment was finally finishing that book you started back in June (no judgment). Either way, September is here and, surprise, the art world has exploded back into action. Art fairs are looming, galleries are rolling out blockbuster shows, and your inbox is suddenly more packed than the VIP lounge at Art Basel.

If your brain is still half in siesta mode, here’s your cheat sheet for getting your head firmly back in the game:

1. Reset Your Routine (aka Pretend You’re a Morning Person)

Summer might have been all late nights, Aperol spritzes, and a questionable approach to your inbox. Autumn, however, demands a bit more structure, at least during the week. The trick? Reset your circadian rhythm. Start setting your alarm a little earlier, carve out a mindful morning (coffee without emails, maybe even a stretch), and ease yourself back into being a functioning morning person.

2. Inbox Triage = Self Care

Your inbox is a battlefield right now, press releases, VIP invites, and that random “hope you had a good summer!” note from someone you barely remember meeting. Don’t panic. Use the three-minute rule: if it takes less than three minutes to deal with, reply now. The rest? Label, snooze, or delegate. (Yes, even “delegating” to Future You counts.)

3. Put the “Social” in Social Season

The autumn art calendar is one long game of professional musical chairs: openings, dinners, fairs, after-parties. Instead of seeing it as exhausting, treat it as networking cardio. Set yourself a goal: one new connection per event. And remember, sometimes the best deals (and gossip) happen at the coat check.

4. Invest in a Power Outfit

Forget back-to-school shopping, back-to-work shopping is the real ritual. Maybe it’s a perfectly oversized blazer, maybe it’s just shoes you can actually stand in for three hours. Whatever makes you feel like you belong in a Larry’s booth while casually discussing post-minimalist tendencies, wear it. Confidence = currency.

5. Re-Inspire Yourself

September can feel like jumping on a treadmill at full speed. Before burnout hits, carve out time for yourself. Duck into a smaller gallery between back-to-back openings and revisit a favourite artwork. The best ideas often appear when you’re not glued to your laptop.

6. Remember: Everyone’s Faking It

That curator who looks impossibly polished? She’s also catching up on 400 unread emails. That artist who seems to be everywhere? He hasn’t unpacked his suitcase since Hydra. The art world runs on smoke, mirrors, and good tailoring, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re actually right on schedule.
