You may remember our feature with Vanessa Cron, the jewel queen at Christie’s? Well, this got us asking about what gems to look out for at auction, you know, for when we find a spare million or two to spend on a few diamonds. Luckily for us, the jewellery specialists at Christie’s have supplied us with a list of the top 10 jewels ever sold through their auctions, and here are the results and a little cheat sheet for all those glamorous talk about diamonds and more:
- The Oppenheimer Blue
A rectangular-cut fancy vivid blue diamond of 14.63 carats, it sold for $57.5 million at Christie’s Geneva in May 2016. This means that each carat is worth $3.9 million, making it a world auction record price for a blue diamond.
2. The Winston Pink Legacy
Just look at this beauty, a fancy vivid pink rectangular-cut diamond ring of 18.96 carats. It sold in Christie’s Geneva in November 2018 for $50.3 million, or $2.65 million per carat, smashing the world record price per carat for a pink diamond.
3. The Orange
But not the edible kind… This pear-shaped fancy vivid orange diamond of 14.82 carats sold for $35.5 million, or $2.4 million per carat at Christie’s Geneva in November 2013. It set world records for both the price of an orange diamond as well as the price per carat for an orange diamond.
4. The Art Of De Grisogno Creation 1
Now this is a piece of bling we’d like to wear to an art gala. The emerald and diamond necklace is set with a rectangular cut D/FL diamond of 163.4 carats. Selling at $33.7 million at Christie’s Geneva in November 2017, it is a flawless diamond (and that’s not just us saying that, the experts claim it too!).
5. The Winston Legacy
This stunning pear-shaped D/FL, type IIA diamond of 101.73 carats sold for $26.7 million at Christie’s Geneva in May 2013.
6. The Cullinan Dream
Selling at $25.3 million or $1.05 million per carat at Christie’s New York in June 2016, the Cullinan Dream set a world auction record price for an intense blue diamond. The rectangular-cut fancy intense blue diamond is 24.18 carats.
7. The Wittelsbach
This historic cushion-cut fancy deep gray-ish blue, type IIB, Golconda diamond of 35.56 carats was sold at Christie’s London in December 2008. It sold for $24.3 million, making it $638,700 per carat.
8. The Archduke Joseph Diamond
Sold at Christie’s Geneva in November 2012, the Archduke Joseph Diamond is a cushion-shaped D/IF, type IIA, Golconda diamond of 76.02 carats. Selling for $21.5 million or $282,500 per carat it set a world auction record price per carat for a colourless diamond.
9. A Pear-Shaped Fancy Vivid Blue IF Diamond Necklace Of 8.01 Carats, By Moussaieiff
This beautiful necklace sold for $20.4 million at Christie’s Hong Kong in May 2018, and we can definitely see why…
10. The Crimson Flame
The cushion-shaped Burmese ruby – note, the only non-diamond in the list – of 15.04 carats sold for $18.3 million at Christie’s Hong Kong in December 2015. Selling at $1.2 million per carat, it set a world auction record per carat for a ruby.
