10 Lessons That Could Change Your Art World Career Forever
Here’s what they don’t teach you in art school…

Here’s what they don’t teach you in art school…

The art world isn’t a straight line – it’s more like a Jackson Pollock painting: chaotic, layered, occasionally splattered with wine. One minute you’re hanging a show with fishing wire and hope, the next you’re emailing someone three times just to get paid.

Whether you’re fresh out of your MA or ten years deep into your practice, these behind-the-scenes truths can make all the difference.

So grab a coffee (or a lukewarm Prosecco from the last PV), step away from the group chat moaning about that open call with a £50 entry fee, and read on:

1. It’s not always about merit. Sometimes, it’s about who you know.

Yes, your portfolio is stunning. Yes, your ideas are sharp. But guess what? That gallery assistant got the gig because they were mates with the curator’s cousin. Harsh? Maybe. True? Often. Connections are currency here, so go to the private view. Chat to the person awkwardly holding the cheap wine. Follow up with the one who said, “We should do something together.” Sometimes, they actually mean it. Be remembered.

2. Sometimes it’s just a job – and that’s okay.

Not every opportunity is your life’s work. Sometimes it pays the bills and funds your studio rent or your next passion project. You don’t romanticise every gig, especially the ones that expect you to work for “exposure”.

3. Feedback is a gift – even when it stings.

Your tutor, your gallerist, your brutally honest friend… when they say something’s not working, listen. You don’t have to agree with everything, but learning to take feedback without spiralling? Game-changer.

4. You’ll outgrow jobs – and people.

That collective you started in uni might not reflect who you are now. That internship that once lit you up might now feel stale. It’s not betrayal – it’s growth.

5. Your degree isn’t enough.

The art world loves a post-grad, but let’s be real: the learning never stops. Pick up new skills – social media strategy, grant writing, digital tools. Stay curious, stay current.

6. Perfection is a myth.

The installation will never be exactly how it looked in your sketchbook. The proposal could always be tighter. At some point, you have to hit “send” and move on. Done is often better than perfect.

7. Soft skills will take you far.

You can be the most talented person in the room, but if you’re a nightmare to work with? Forget it. Be kind. Be responsive. Be someone people want on the install team at midnight before an opening.

8. You get what you negotiate.

Don’t be shy about your rates. Or asking for travel expenses. Or querying a contract. People respect confidence – and they often have a budget they haven’t mentioned. Ask.

9. Choose your manager (or mentor) wisely.

A supportive leader can elevate you. A toxic one can make you question your whole career. Pay attention to how you’re treated – it matters more than a fancy title or brand name.

10. Prioritise your well-being. Always.

That all-nighter prepping your show isn’t worth the burnout. That commission that gives you anxiety hives every time you open your inbox? Not worth it. Protect your peace. There is another opportunity out there for you!
