A Cheat Sheet On Loie Hollowell
A Brief Exploration of Loie Hollowell's Artistic Universe
Feature 16 Feb 2024

In the vast realm of contemporary art, few names captivate the imagination quite like that of American, New York-based, painter Loie Hollowell, b.1983. With a distinctive style that blends abstraction with themes of sexuality and the human form, Hollowell has emerged as a luminary within the art world.

Here, we uncover the essence of Hollowell’s artistry, exploring influences and the symbolism that define her captivating body of work.

Artistic Style & Influences

Loie Hollowell is renowned for her distinctive abstract paintings characterized by bold, organic forms and vibrant colors. Her work often explores themes of sexuality, femininity, and the human body, drawing inspiration from artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe and Judy Chicago. She is also greatly influenced by the work of the California Light and Space Movement as well as Neo-Tantric painters like Ghulam Rasool Santosh and Biren De.

Educational Background

Hollowell received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara, before earning her Master of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her academic journey greatly influenced her artistic development, providing her with a strong foundation in various techniques and concepts.

Rapid Rise to Prominence

Despite being relatively young in her career, Hollowell quickly garnered attention within the contemporary art world. Her exhibitions have been showcased in prestigious galleries and museums internationally, including solo shows at the Pace Gallery in New York, and her work has sold for seven figures on the secondary market. Her works belong in the collections of the Long Museum, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.

Symbolism & Imagery

Hollowell’s work often incorporates symbolic imagery, such as abstracted forms reminiscent of the human body, breasts, and vulvas. These elements are depicted in a highly stylized manner, inviting viewers to contemplate themes of embodiment, fertility, and eroticism through a lens of abstraction. Since welcoming her own children in 2018 and 2020, Hollowell’s artistic focus has shifted towards introspection, abstractly examining the female form. She is captivated by its ability to nurture life, to undergo transformation, and to regenerate following significant changes.

Critical Acclaim & Recognition

Hollowell’s contributions to contemporary art have been widely praised by critics and peers alike. She has received numerous accolades and awards, including grants from institutions, solidifying her status as one of her generation’s most promising emerging artists. Her next show titled ‘Dilation Stage’ will take place from 8 March – 20 April 2024 in Pace Gallery, New York. Find out more details here.
