From Banksy to Madonna’s underwear drawer…
News 10 Jun 2019

Girl, we know, it’s hard to keep up to date all of the time. Sometimes there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to read up on all the art world gossip, no matter how much you want to (or kidded yourself that you wanted to anyway). Luckily, we’ve got you covered with a round-up of everything you missed this week.
Banksy Pops Up at the Royal Academy

London’s Royal Academy opened its annual summer exhibition this week, and there was a surprising exhibitor present amongst the works: a certain camera-shy artist who goes by the name of Banksy. The Brexit-themed installation is entitled Keep Ou – “ou” meaning “where” in French – and is made from a customs arch salvaged from Heathrow airport, a roller shutter and spray paint. At the bottom of the piece Banksy’s trademark rat can be seen, waving a hammer at a padlock.
Picasso’s Lover to Get Solo Show

Dora Maar is stepping out of the shadow of her former lover Picasso, with her first retrospective having just opened at Paris’s Centre Pompidou. The show will then travel to Los Angeles and London.
Facebook Agrees to Reconsider Censorship of Art

After activists protested nude under the banner #FreetheNipple in at Facebook headquarters in New York, Facebook stakeholders have agreed to meet with artists, art educators, museum curators and activists to discuss the issue of nude photographic art that depicts women. While Facebook had previously lifted bans against nudity in sculptures and paintings, photographic artworks of nude female bodies are still censored, though there are no restrictions towards men.

BREAKING NEWS: Court rules in favor of GottaHaveRockandRoll.com against Madonna over the auction of her personal items including Tupac Shakur’s break-up letter. On Tuesday June 4, 2019, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, in a unanimous 5-0 decision, ruled in favor of GottaHaveRockandRoll.com and against Madonna over the auction of her personal items including a breakup letter from rap legend Tupac Shakur. “We won at the trial court, and now a unanimous appeals court in Manhattan has sided for us said owners of GottaHaveRockandRoll.com. Jeffrey Haas, attorney for GottaHaveRockandRoll.com, added, “My co-counsel Hartley Bernstein and I were fully prepared in the event Madonna appealed the soundly decided lower court decision, and it was gratifying to see that justice continued to be blind to Madonna’s celebrity and money and the alchemy of her high profile legal counsel.” Added co-counsel Hartley Bernstein, “Celebrity does not trump the facts. Here, those facts were plain as day. Ms. Lutz, the consignor, owns the items and GottaHaveRockandRoll.com is free to sell them on her behalf.” Registration is now open for our July 2019 auction, which will feature incredible Madonna items, and much, much more. You can register here. We are also currently accepting consignments. As they say, be careful of who you get into bed with. Madonna has just lost a lawsuit with her former art advisor Darlene Lutz, who she worked with for 22 years. This now means that an auction of the icon’s personal belongings is able to go on sale, with items including to-do lists, lingerie and a letter from Tupac Shakur. Madonna failed to reclaim her possessions since she fell outside the three-year period of limitations to recover them. The items will now be sold via Gotta Have Rock and Roll – an online auctioneer specializing in celebrity items – in a sale running between 17 and 26 July.
