The Art News You Missed While Flirting With An Art Boy
Unfortunately the Britney show is a hoax, but we can confirm The Weeknd is an art collector
Around the Globe 16 Jan 2020

A new year, a new art boy’s DMs to slide into. We get it, it’s nice spending time with your gal pals, but sometimes it wouldn’t hurt to have a cute art hunk to hold hands with at the Gagosian opening. But, while you’ve been busy letting that art guy know you like him, a LOT has gone down in the art world. Lucky for you though, we’ve got you sorted with our highlights!

As mentioned in @HYPEBEAST | 'OAF will return to New York City’s Metropolitan Pavilion this week, displaying works by self-taught artists from over 60 exhibitors. A total of 10 new galleries have been added to the lineup alongside a redesigned floor plan and special programs. One of the highlights of the fair is its “Curated Spaces” section that will encompass two group exhibitions: “The Hummingbird Paints Fragrant Songs” and “Relishing the Raw: Contemporary Artists Collecting Outsider Art.” The latter presentation, curated by Paul Laster, will feature a painting by California-based artist Helen Rae that was loaned by KAWS.' As Outsider Art Fair opens in New York, we’re excited to see that a new Curated Space section will include works owned by our favourite artists. The hot names loaning works include Cindy Sherman, KAWS and Maurizio Cattelan, and we can’t wait to see what’s in their collections.

Opening Ceremony Acquired By New Guards Group

View this post on Instagram

This is why it’s incredibly emotional for us to announce today that we will be closing our Opening Ceremony retail locations sometime in 2020. We’ve made a decision to focus on growing Opening Ceremony collection and brand with our new partners, New Guards Group, and expand the designs of Opening Ceremony. Our brand takes the beautiful spirit of experimentation, fun and collaboration embodied in our stores and imbues this energy into the clothing we make. We know our decision may surprise you and it may be interpreted in many different ways. Ultimately, in this time of immense change in the way that people shop, we still believe in the power of passionate and unique retail. But we also believe in the necessity for change, reflection and an opportunity to refresh. This is a moment of transition for Opening Ceremony and, together with our new partners, we are taking the chance to step back and evaluate the future of our Opening Ceremony retail experience. We are stepping back from multi-brand retail, for a moment, so we can come back with an experience that is just as inspiring, filled with love and relevant for the years ahead as Opening Ceremony has been.

The trademark and intellectual property of Opening Ceremony has been acquired by New Guards Group, a platform owned by Farfetch. We’re not sure exactly what this means, but apparently founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim will stay on as co-creative directors. That said, OC announced on the gram that they will be closing their retail stores to focus on growing their collections.

David Hockney’s Splash Up For Sale At Sotheby’s

View this post on Instagram

David Hockney’s landmark pool painting is set to make a ‘splash’ in London ? Painted in 1966, ‘The Splash’ is expected to sell for more than £20 million when it appears in our Contemporary Art Evening Auction on February 11. The painting captures a fleeting moment just seconds after a diver has broken the calm surface of a swimming pool. It is one of a series of three ‘splashes’, the largest of which is a jewel in the @Tate collection. The painting follows the artist’s relocation to LA just months earlier. The city was everything the Yorkshire-born artist had hoped it would be: a land of possibility, sun drenched houses, deep blue pools, palm trees and beautiful bodies, and ‘The Splash’ embodies the warmth, affluence, and pursuit of pleasure which Hockney so loved about this Californian dreamland. – #SothebysContemporary #CaliforniaDreaming #DavidHockney #losangeles

Probably one of the most iconic works of the last century, David Hockney’s Splash is going under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on February 11. Expected to go for $26 million minimum, we’re sure it will be a lively sale!
