How to Get Paid for Your Art Opinions
Keep writing, keep pitching, and most importantly, keep looking at art.
Career 09 Jul 2026

So, you want to be an art writer? Maybe you dream of getting paid to wax poetic about Basquiat, dissect the latest Turner Prize controversy, or craft the perfect takedown of a questionable AI-generated exhibition. Whatever your angle, making it as an art writer or critic requires more than just a love of art, it’s about developing a sharp eye, a unique voice, and, let’s be real, some serious hustle. Here’s how to get started.

Write First, Worry Later

Before worrying about where to publish, just start writing. Keep a blog, post reviews on Instagram, or turn your Notes app into an archive of hot takes. The more you write, the more you refine your perspective, and the easier it is to convince an editor you know what you’re talking about.

Find Your Niche (and Your Voice)

Are you into old masters or the latest in digital art? Do you prefer deep dives into theory, or are you the go-to for snappy reviews with a side of pop culture? Defining your style early will help you stand out in a crowded field.

Start Small, Think Big

Pitching to the big hitters on day one? Ambitious, but maybe ease in. Start with indie art blogs, local magazines, or niche online platforms.

Master the Art of the Pitch

Editors are busy. Keep it short, sharp, and snappy. Introduce yourself, explain your idea in a few sentences, and why it’s a great fit for their publication. Oh, and follow up! Persistence (without being annoying) is key.

Make Friends, Not Just Contacts

The art world runs on connections. Go to openings, talk to artists, and engage with fellow writers online. Social media can be a goldmine for networking, and sometimes the best opportunities come from a casual chat rather than a cold pitch.

Read (and Then Read Some More)

Good writers are obsessive readers. Immerse yourself in the classics, stay sharp with contemporary critics, and keep up with new publications, newsletters, and daily art news. The more you understand the landscape, the easier it is to carve out your own space within it.

Get Comfortable with Rejection

Even the best writers get ignored, rejected, or ghosted. Don’t take it personally, tweak your pitch, find another home for your piece, and keep going. The art world loves a comeback story.

At the end of the day, art writing is about passion, curiosity, and a willingness to keep showing up. Keep writing, keep pitching, and most importantly, keep looking at art, your voice is needed!
