How To Survive The Art World Without Being A Social Butterfly
Let's get over social anxiety
Art Stuff 14 Oct 2019

If you work in the art world, chances are you are forced to attend openings, previews, dinners, cocktails, etc. This is great for social butterflies who can command attention from one side of the room to the other, but if you’re somewhat of a wallflower this kind of situation may just keep you up at night. So, what can you do if you find yourself in a room with 10+ people and need to turn your charm and witty repertoire on?

Wine:

It’s ridiculous to tell people to drink, but it certainly helps me. Before you get dragged into a lengthy discussion about a painting’s value, just grab yourself a glass of red and sip it. It will also be a great way to evade conversation altogether if it gets overwhelming just say – “Oh, I’m off to get a refill”.
Own up:
As of late this is my go to, just acknowledge what a social mess you are, chances are other people around you are as nervous/awkward/anxious as you are. Don’t blurt it out and try to be casual, have a sense of humour about it, if the conversation is flowing just say something like – “I was a bit late because it truly took me 30 minutes to muster the courage to come in, I’m so awkward around big groups.”

Find someone you know:
This is also a great one, find someone you’re comfortable with, or at least have met before and stick next to them. Make sure not to go too crazy on this one, if you sense the other person wants to move on just give them space and go back to step one – get wine.
Don’t hide:
Chances are someone friendly or who you want to talk to will show up and hiding in the bathroom really isn’t a good plan.
