Imposter Syndrome Bingo Art World Edition
If you’ve ever apologised while introducing your own work, you’ve already won.
Career 05 Aug 2025

Let’s be honest: the art world runs on a delicate cocktail of creativity, caffeine, and crushing self-doubt. Whether you’re curating your first group show, battling your inbox as a gallery assistant, or wondering why everyone else seems to have a solo show and a book deal, imposter syndrome is your unofficial colleague.

But instead of spiralling into existential dread (again), let’s play a game.

We present: Art World Imposter Syndrome Bingo. Tick them off. Cry a little. Laugh a lot. Realise you’re not alone.

🎟️ BINGO CARD

(Tick all that apply)

  • “I just got lucky.”
  • “Someone else would’ve done a better job.”
  • Apologised while presenting your work—twice.
  • Said “I’m not really an artist-artist…”
  • Thought about deleting your Instagram after seeing a peer’s solo show.
  • Called yourself a “creative generalist” because you panicked on a panel.
  • Laughed nervously when someone called you talented.
  • Spent 40 minutes rewriting your LinkedIn bio, then didn’t post it.
  • Downplayed your career win by blaming it on Mercury retrograde.
  • Felt personally attacked by someone saying “nepotism in the art world is real.”
  • Doubted your own opinion… in your own artist statement.
  • Over-prepared for a meeting, then didn’t speak.
  • Cried in the gallery loo.
  • Claimed your last work was “just a bit of fun.”
  • Had a dream where Hans Ulrich Obrist said you were basic.

But Seriously, Why Do We All Feel Like Frauds?

Because the art world is smoke and mirrors. There’s no universal path and no one-size-fits-all metric of success. And when your work is tied to your identity, it’s easy to internalise rejection (or silence) as proof you’re not good enough. Add a sprinkle of gatekeeping, a dash of hustle culture, and voilà: existential dread in a turtleneck.

What to Do Instead?

Reframe: You’re not an imposter, you’re a beginner. Or mid-level. Or evolving. All legit.
Document your wins: Keep a ‘nice things people said’ folder. Revisit often.
Speak up: You’ll be amazed how many people feel the same.
Stop apologising for existing. Your voice is valid, even when it trembles.

So next time you feel like you’re winging it? Congrats, you’re doing it exactly right.

And if you just ticked off 12 squares?

BINGO, BABY.
