New Year Work Resolutions (and How to Actually Keep Them)
Here’s to showing up anyway. 🥂
Entertainment 31 Dec 2025

If 2025 taught the art world anything, it’s resilience. Between cautious collectors, quieter fairs, and the occasional “is the market crashing?” group chat, staying optimistic has become a professional skill in itself. As we head into a new year, here are a few work resolutions designed specifically for the art world, and, crucially, ways to keep them when things feel wobbly.

Stop doom-scrolling the market
Yes, the headlines are loud. No, they’re not the full picture. Resolution: limit your intake of panic-fuelled think pieces and focus on what’s actually moving, emerging artists, regional scenes, and collectors playing the long game. Optimism isn’t ignorance; it’s strategy.

Invest in relationships, not just results
When sales slow, connections matter more. Curators, writers, gallerists, designers, and clients, these relationships outlast any single season. Make time for coffees, studio visits, and thoughtful follow-ups. The art world runs on trust, not algorithms.

Keep making (even when it feels pointless)
Write the pitch. Send the proposal. Stage the exhibition. Launch the project. Momentum rarely arrives fully formed, it’s built quietly, often during the slowest moments. Future opportunities are usually hiding inside work done during uncertain years.

Get realistic about success
Not every win needs to be a museum acquisition or a seven-figure sale. Sometimes success looks like consistency, clarity, or simply staying in the game. Redefine what “progress” means, especially in a market recalibrating itself.

Stay curious, not cynical
The art world has survived worse than 2025. New voices, formats, and audiences always emerge when the old systems creak. Curiosity keeps you relevant; cynicism just makes you tired.

Protect your energy like it’s inventory
Burnout helps no one, especially not in an industry powered by passion. Boundaries, rest, and saying no are not signs of disengagement; they’re how you stay in it for the long haul.

The art world may be contracting, shifting, and occasionally spiralling but it’s also adapting, rethinking, and quietly rebuilding. Going into the new year, staying positive isn’t naïve. It’s an act of professional optimism.

Here’s to showing up anyway. 🥂
