You may have noticed Nour Mouffarej on Instagram, if not you definitely would have spotted her arty diary. The Dubai-based art collector has an eye for colour and a penchant for Japanese and Asian contemporary art. Her collection is super fun and she shares all about her arty escapades on her Instagram account. We sat down with Nour to chat about how she started collecting, her role models and tips for starting a collection.
When did you first become interested in art?
My interest in art developed around 2015, shortly after I graduated from high school. Having been exposed to a variety of galleries and exceptional art collections, I began to appreciate the depth and value of fine art beyond just its aesthetic appeal. It became clear to me that art is a reflection of history, culture, and creativity.
What was the first artwork you acquired?
The first artwork I acquired wasn’t one I purchased; it was a piece that was passed down to me by my grandfather. It’s a Paul Guiragossian painting from the 1970s, which holds both sentimental and historical value.
Do you have any criteria when selecting artworks?
For me, the story and meaning behind an artwork are crucial. The artist has to have a distinctive voice, and the piece needs to resonate on a deeper level. While some works might not grab you instantly, true art lovers can sense the depth and authenticity that define exceptional art.
Why do you have a focus on Asian art in particular?
I’ve always been drawn to Asian art, particularly Japanese artists. The unique drawing styles, the delicate portrayal of characters, the stories and the symbolism in the works, especially the big-eyed figures, all deeply connect with me. There’s a depth in the culture and artistry that speaks volumes.
Do you have any role models in the art world?
I would say my mother is my greatest role model in the art world. She has an incredible eye for beauty and a deep understanding of art history. Whenever I need advice or a second opinion, her knowledge and taste are invaluable to me.
Do you have any tips for someone wanting to start an art collection?
My advice is to take your time. Don’t rush into buying just because something is trendy. Understand what you truly love, and focus on that. A meaningful collection is built over time, and it’s about quality, not just following the hype.
Are there any artists you have your eye on right now?
I’m particularly interested in emerging artists from Asia who are aiming to make a mark in the Middle Eastern art scene. There’s a growing wave of talent that brings fresh perspectives and unique styles, and I believe they’re well-positioned to make an impact as the art market here continues to expand.
What are your plans and hopes for the future?
I want to focus on a particular art style that deeply resonates with me. I also hope to see more contemporary artists gaining recognition in the Middle East as the region’s art market continues to grow. I believe it’s a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange and artistic growth.
